The venue decides more of your wedding than anything else you'll book. Here are the questions we wish every couple asked before they signed. ### Start with the guest count, not the photos Every couple starts on Instagram. We understand — we're on there too. But the number of people you actually want in the room narrows the list faster than any mood board. Thirty people and a vineyard patio is a completely different wedding than a hundred and fifty in a lodge, and a venue that can technically fit your list isn't the same as one that fits it comfortably once you add tables, a dance floor, and a bar. Write the guest number down first. Then look at venues. ### Ask what's actually included This is where budgets move the most. Some properties hand you a beautiful empty field. Others include tables, chairs, and linens with setup and takedown — [Rock Springs Ranch near Bend](https://kellyhammondevents.com/venues/rock-springs-ranch) does, along with the string lights on the deck — which quietly removes a rental line from your budget. Neither is better. But two venues quoting a similar number can land thousands apart once you price what one includes and the other doesn't. Ask for the inclusion list in writing. Then ask what happens if it rains. ### Read the vendor rules before you fall in love Plenty of venues require licensed, insured caterers and bartenders, and some require you to pick from their preferred list — Rock Springs asks for a professional DJ from theirs. If you've already got your heart set on a caterer, that rule decides the venue for you. Same with curfews: a 10 p.m. music cutoff is common, and it's fine, as long as you built your timeline around it instead of discovering it three weeks out. We ask about vendor rules, curfews, load-in windows, and power on the first call with any property. It's unglamorous and it saves entire weekends. ### Where will your people sleep For anything outside town, lodging is part of the venue decision. On the coast, [Crook Point](https://kellyhammondevents.com/venues/crook-point) has eight oceanfront homes on the property, so your family is five minutes from the ceremony instead of forty in Brookings. Rock Springs sleeps up to sixty-four people across the lodge and cabins for the weekend. If a venue can't house anyone, find out what's within a twenty-minute drive before you commit — and count the rooms, not the hotels. Guests flying in mostly land at Medford. From there it's roughly three hours to the far south coast, and a good bit more to Bend. That drive belongs on your invitation, not in a group text the week of. ### Weather is a plan, not a hope Southern Oregon summers are generous and the coast has opinions. Coastal fog photographs beautifully and burns off on its own schedule; December through February is the genuinely wet stretch. Inland, the Rogue Valley runs hot in July and August, which mostly means shade and water for your guests and a ceremony time that isn't 2 p.m. Every venue tour should end with the same question: *if the forecast turns, where exactly does the ceremony happen?* If the answer is vague, that's the answer. Worth it sometimes. Just decide on purpose rather than discovering the gap when we build the timeline. ### When to bring us in Before you sign, if you can.
