## Getting married at *Capella by the Sea?*

A small wooden chapel in the trees above the Chetco River, seats forty-nine,
rented by the hour from the City of Brookings. Here's how to build a whole
wedding day around it.

### What it actually is

Capella by the Sea is a small A-frame chapel in
[Azalea Park](https://www.brookings.or.us/facilities/facility/details/capellabythesea-2)
in Brookings, on the far southern Oregon coast. It's built of native wood
and stone, it's full of light, and it looks out through the trees toward
the Port of Brookings-Harbor, the mouth of the Chetco River, and the
Pacific beyond.

It exists because of one person. Oscar-winning film editor and producer
Elmo Williams, who retired to Brookings and lived there more than forty
years, had it built in 2008 and donated it to the city in 2009 as a
memorial to his wife, Lorraine. The design came from architects Maurice
Jennings and David McKee, working in the tradition of E. Fay Jones — which
is why a small municipal chapel feels like something you'd drive out of
your way to see. It seats **forty-nine people**, and that number is the
whole planning problem in one figure.

### Who it's right for

Couples who want the ceremony to feel like a moment rather than a
production. Forty-nine is a real guest list — parents, siblings, the
friends who'd notice if they weren't there — and it's small enough that
nobody is watching your vows on a screen. It suits a

larger [elopement](https://kellyhammondevents.com/elopements) far better than a full-scale reception
plan.

It also happens to be one of the most affordable ceremony sites on this
coast, which is a large part of why couples from out of state end up
finding it. The city rents it by the hour with a two-hour minimum, takes a
nonrefundable booking fee, and requires event insurance — current rates and
the booking contact are on the city's page, and they're the ones to talk to
about the date.

### What it isn't

It is a ceremony space, not a wedding venue in the all-day sense. There's
no reception hall attached, no catering kitchen, no getting-ready suite,
and no bar. Bench seating and parking are there; everything else you're
bringing or booking somewhere else.

That's not a strike against it — it's just the shape of the day. A Capella
wedding is usually a two-hour ceremony window plus a reception somewhere
else in Brookings-Harbor: a restaurant, a rented house, the beach, or a
[fully set picnic](https://kellyhammondevents.com/elopements) on the sand at golden hour. Building that
second half, and the timeline that gets forty-nine people from one to the
other without a forty-minute gap, is most of the work.

### The planner's notes

**Straight with you about this one:** we have a Capella wedding on the books,
and we've been in the chapel for someone else's, but we haven't run one here
yet. So these notes come from the city's rules, the room itself, and years of
weddings a few miles up this coast — not from a dozen ceremonies in this
particular building. When we've run one, we'll write that guide too.

**Two hours is the ceremony, not the wedding.** The rental minimum sounds
generous until you count setup, a photographer who wants portraits in that
light, and the fact that guests arrive early. We build the day backward
from the ceremony hour and keep the chapel window tight and calm.

**Confirm your rules with the city, in writing.** Music, candles,
decorations, and what you can attach to anything are the city's call, not
ours or your florist's. We ask those questions before anyone designs
anything, because a chapel this beautiful needs very little added to it
anyway.

**Plan the gap.** Two-hour ceremony rental plus a reception across town
creates a natural hole in the afternoon. Fill it deliberately — portraits
on the beach, a cocktail hour with a view, a shuttle — or your guests will
fill it themselves, in their cars, on their phones.

**Brookings is the warm one.** This stretch south of Port Orford is
genuinely Oregon's banana belt: the Chetco Effect funnels warm inland air
down the river canyon and Brookings routinely runs far warmer than the
coast an hour north. It's the most forgiving weather on the Oregon coast
for an outdoor reception — which does not mean you skip a rain plan.

**Getting your people here.** Crescent City (CEC) is about half an hour
south across the California line and the closest airport, with limited
service. Most guests fly into Medford (MFR) — roughly three hours over the
mountains, and our home turf — or North Bend (OTH) up the coast. Put the
drive on the invitation, not in a group text the week of.

**Where they sleep.** Brookings-Harbor has hotels and vacation rentals, and
they book out for summer weekends well ahead. Reserve a block or a couple
of houses as soon as you have a date. If lodging is the deciding factor for

### Capella by the Sea, answered.

**How many people fit in Capella by the Sea?**

Forty-nine is the maximum occupancy. That's a hard number, not a comfortable-seating estimate, so build your guest list around it before you book anything else.

**How do you book it?**

Through the City of Brookings, which rents the chapel year-round by the hour with a two-hour minimum, a nonrefundable booking fee, and required event insurance. Current rates and the booking contact are on the city's facility page. We're happy to sit in on that conversation with you.

**Is there a reception space?**

No. Capella is a ceremony space — bench seating, parking, and a view. Receptions happen elsewhere in Brookings-Harbor: a restaurant, a rented house, or a fully set picnic on the beach. Planning that second half is where we spend most of our time on a Capella wedding.

**Can we get married on the beach instead?**

Yes, and plenty of couples pair the two. Oregon's ocean shore is public, and small ceremonies are generally fine, but setting up chairs, arches, or tents — or bringing a larger group — puts you into Oregon Parks and Recreation permit territory. Ask early; those applications want lead time.

**What about a marriage license?**

Oregon licenses come from any county clerk — Curry County's office serves Brookings and Gold Beach. Both of you appear together with photo ID, there's a three-day waiting period before the license can be used, and it's valid for sixty days and only within Oregon. If you're marrying across the line in Crescent City, you need a California license from Del Norte County instead.

**When is the best time of year?**

Late spring through early fall is the safe window, and Brookings runs warmer than the rest of the Oregon coast year-round thanks to the Chetco Effect. Summer weekends book earliest. Winter is beautiful and genuinely wet — December through February is the heavy stretch.

**We live out of state. Can you handle everything?**
